The older I get the more creeped out I get at the fact that American schools strongly (they can’t force) kids to say a “Pledge of Allegiance” to a flag.
I mean, I willfully and dutifully said the pledge when I was in school. It was expected and if you were caught not saying “The Pledge” you got in trouble. Just how much trouble you got in depended wholesale on how the teacher was feeling that day, too!
But as I get older the more I find the entire charade to be creepy as fuck.
No Country deserves its citizen’s allegiance. It’s not like any of us had a choice where our parents fucked and where we ended up being born.
If anything, my Country should be pledging it’s allegiance to me! After all, what is a Country that’s of the people, by the people, and for the people if anything without its people!
