n.b. that historical stockings were tied below the knee, where the leg is thinnest—consensus is that it's basically impossible for premodern materials to stay up your leg unless your thighs are thinner than your knees. you still need a garder band to tie the top—just don't expect it to tie above the knee and stay there.
