Digger, the latest film from Alejandro Gonzalez IRérritu, is both a tiresome hodgepodge of many things and also a great deal of nothing. It's a Tom Cruise-starring dark “comedy” of sorts where he does a whole lot playing a spectacle of a man bringing about the end of the world and yet also feels stripped of anything resembling complexity. It gestures towards many urgent questions about life and the perilous state of the world as we know it, just as it ultimately blinks in the face of destruction. It comes in the vague shape of a satire but without any of the actual humor, insight, or bite needed to make it leave any sort of impact. As the world burns around it, rather than look it dead in the eyes, it's a sweeping yet superficial shrug of a film that seems to feel there is no purpose for you to care about it either.
