A head-on close-up of the bumper, grill, headlights, hood ornament, and windshield of a 95-year-old car. The headlights are as big and round as dinner plates. The grill is rectangular and the size of a mirror over a fireplace mantle. And the car body is as unstreamlined and dignified as a hearse. It is magnificent. But it does not come with ventilated seats that blow cold air up your butt I like my Mazda does... so that's a trade-off.

A Ford Model A, spotted 4 weeks ago on Valencia Street in the Mission.

Produced in 1927–1932 as the successor to the Model T, Ford sold nearly 4.9 million of these beauties.

The Model A introduced standard three-speed transmissions, four-wheel mechanical brakes, and hydraulic shock absorbers. Its 4-cylinder, 40 horsepower engine could hit a respectable 55 to 65 mph. And you could get it in green, maroon, blue, ivory, and sand... not just black!

Prices ranged from $500 to $1,200 when new... one third to one fourth the cost of a new car in today's dollars.
