Replacing a forest with a police training center will only create a more violently policed society, in which taxpayer resources enrich police and weapons companies rather than addressing social needs. Mass incarceration and police militarization have failed to bring down crime or improve conditions for poor and working-class communities. In Atlanta and across the US, investment in police budgets comes at the expense of access to food, education, childcare, and healthcare, of affordable and stable housing, of parks and public spaces, of transit and the free movement of people, of economic stability for the many. Concentrating resources in the hands of police serves to defend the extreme accumulation of wealth and power by corporations and the very rich. What do cops do with their increased budgets and their carte blanche from politicians? They kill people, every single day. They incarcerate and traumatize schoolchildren, parents, loved ones who are simply struggling to survive. We must not settle for a society organized recklessly upon the values of violence, racism, greed, and careless indifference to life.

OK, so what can you do for Atlanta in honor of Tortuguita (Manuel Teran) (Rest in Power), the forest defender murdered yesterday by police in another raid, and to help #StopCopCity and preserve the Welaunee Forest?

The struggle has been a militant one, with graffiti, arsons, tree-sits and blockades happenings alongside call-in campaigns and marches with kids. They don't necessarily need more militancy (though that's ofc welcomed too) - they do definitely need more mass participation and widespread awareness of the fight - a struggle made for 2023 combining fighting climate change as well as police impunity; racial justice as well as environmental and economic justice.

ATL folks have made this solidarity statement and asks people and orgs far and wide to sign on. Click the link to learn how: https://defendtheatlantaforest.org/2023/01/19/solidarity/

TALK TO the grannies in the local peace group. TALK TO the punk cafe collective in your town. TALK TO the enviro NGO people and your local police brutality group. Talk to your mom's hiking club!
