Well, it feels weird to talk about (almost like discussing it makes it real) but I was laid off from my tech job a week ago.
My layoff was not stemming from AI; instead, the company I worked for had a complete shift in how they were funded.
This meant fewer customers, which meant less demand for what I do (which, mostly, was "help customer debug complex technical issues in cloud systems that they, themselves, were generally the cause of").
I'm thinking this was my former employers first ever set of layoffs; I say this because they seemed genuinely distressed and the severance was generous. We'll be fine for a while and I'm looking as of now.
I have several options to explore - I have a network, it turns out. How strange. And I'm lucky enough to be in areas of tech that aren't as affected by the layoffs we see everywhere. We'll see how that plays out, eh?
Regardless, my biggest obstacle is sheer anxiety. I did not see this coming and this is one of the most anxious times of my life. To justify why this is I will just gesture to the world around us.
I'm not doing #fedihired right now but I will always re-boost when I see it.
Ran into family friends from childhood while out last night, and all they could talk about is that my dad had a heart attack a few months ago.
My family is downplaying it so much, and it was the first time I got to talk to someone who took it seriously (except my wife), and it was nice.
At my first #political event here in South #Florida since I moved back, 7 years ago.
My Congressperson, #SheilaCherfilusMcCormick, and guest Representative #MaxineWaters are scheduled to be discussing #Project2025 as part of the #DemocraticParty open house here in #BrowardCounty.
This is an updated #introduction as my last introduction was 440 days ago.
My name is Ville and I work as an IT technician in Sweden. I've always loved #tech, especially #Apple.
I also like to read #books. (My favorite books are YA #LGBTQ).
I love to create new websites, apps but most of all host servers. In 2022 I started my #Mastodon server, and last year I started my Apple Bingo website.
It's been a bit of a rough week. I've been a little melancholy.
First I learn that one of the hosts of Married to the Games, a podcast I've been listening to for a decade passed away a week ago.
A friend of mine's mother pass away a day ago.
My spouse's car needs a new engine. So he's going to cut his losses and buy a new car. It's an unexpected expense, especially with these interest rates.
I bought a couple packs of those Duracell "Child-Secure" batteries.
Upon opening, they *smelled* bitter, so of course I licked one to see how bitter it actually was.
That was an hour ago.
My mouth still tastes bad.
