Same sunrise, different angles and colours and times. Same Alt Text follows for all photos. Short version: colours and effects in a skyspace dome. Fuller description: What looks like the Earth or the moon in a coloured ‘sky’ above us. The ‘planet’ is really an aperture in the room of the dome we’re standing inside. We are seeing the sky changing colour at dawn, clouds making shapes as they move – a midsummer sunrise dawning between 3am and 4 am. This is inside the underground Skyspace dome ‘As Seen Below’, designed by artist James Turrell. Part of ARoS Art Museum, Aarhus, Denmark. The Dome is mostly underground – 40 metres in diameter, 16 metres high. As people view the sunrise, vivid colours change on the concrete walls and ground of the vast circular room that has a special acoustic too. It is a hard-to-describe immersive experience. In the photos, I think it’s hard to know what you are looking at – it’s difficult to tell the ‘planet’ is a hole or that it’s high above us.
