This is a fun thing to do.

I think so. I think this is a really good read on it: http://www.emulators.com/nx_toc.htm , and specifically if you read none of the other stuff, like, if you start with this, you'll get the main idea: http://www.emulators.com/docs/nx25_nostradamus.htm , and https://web.archive.org/web/20080201171658/http://lists.canonical.org/pipermail/kragen-tol/2007-September/000871.html is also very good. I think if you can wrap your head around those two things, you've got a really good idea of how a bytecode VM works and what the practical constraints are and what makes them slow and how to unslow them. jonesforth is an excellent read, which is why I mirror it everywhere: https://git.freespeechextremist.com/gitweb/?p=jonesforth , you wanna start with the .s file ( https://git.freespeechextremist.com/gitweb/?p=jonesforth;a=blob;f=jonesforth.S;h=45e6e854a5d2a4c3f26af264dfce56379d401425;hb=HEAD ).
