We weren’t really taught “proper” cursive, but still had to use joined-up letters. Once we were about 8 years old, we also had to prove our writing was “nice”/legible before we were allowed to upgrade to using fountain pens. All school work from then onwards was subsequently written in ink, and marks were deducted if it was illegible.
