A male California Quail stands atop a pile of rocks that anchor a black metal feeder pole, keeping watch over his mate, a female quail below him looking for seed on the ground. The male has a black face with striking white lines, a touch of russet on his head, grey neck, and what almost looks like a fish scale pattern in black, rust and white on his belly. It’s hard to see here, but he also has a black plume standing out from his forehead. The female is more drab, looking mostly grey and brown with some white markings on her wings. There’s a male Grosbeak on the ground next to the female quail. He has a black head, brilliant orange body, and a mix of black and white markings on his wing.
