Two Black-headed Grosbeaks perch on curled arches at the top of a black metal feeder pole, one on each side, while a second Grosbeak perches eating seed on the edge of a seed tray attached to the pole lower down. The Grosbeaks have black heads, brilliant orange bodies, and a mix of black and white markings on their wings and tails. The Grosbeak on the upper left arch is a female and she’s lighter orange with less distinct markings on her tail.

It’s the season to be visited by Black-headed Grosbeaks. They’re such beautiful birds. Called grosbeaks because of their thick, strong beaks.
They were visited by a House Finch and one hung out with some California Quail on the ground.
