Here's something: Pleroma's means of federating posts is extremely well thought-out. (lain is probably the most thoughtful of any of the devs that work on fedi software, to the extent that if I am not sure what to do, I will just look at what Pleroma does.) So, a post federates when an activity references it: a repost ("Announce" activity), a like, a reply. This is why Pleroma federates likes, it's a good idea. This means that you take the list of people followed by everyone on a server, and they make these activities, they smash that like, the thread replicates. Good threads replicate more (where "good" means threads people on your server are likely to want to see). You're following someone, they like a post, that thread arrives on your server. Cool, federation is biased towards things you want to see! Not perfect, but works out well enough.
...Or it used to. The stupid emoji reactions are a cancer not just because they're lame, but because now someone clicking a thumbs-down or an "X" or a wrench or whatever makes the post they *disliked* (but not enough to write an actual reply) federate to all the servers where anyone is following the person that clicked the emoji reaction button. So now, instead of TWKN filling up with posts from threads that someone was interested in, you have this other bullshit. Someone clicked a red "X", now everyone's server fetches the thread. Instead of federating posts people want, it federates posts from threads where anyone engaged in any capacity. This is the shit that made Twitter suck (before Twitter eventually became completely intolerable). Not all engagement is equal, not all of it is desirable to federate. Someone sees someone say something stupid in an internet slap-fight, and they don't join the thread, they just a drive-by click on thumbs-down because they hate that post, and now everyone whose server had someone following them gets that stupid slap-fight on their server.

Retarded feature used entirely for Twitter-style bullshit interactions, included only because people whined at Gleason that Soapbox wasn't Twitter and Gleason is a retarded monkey, then the retarded Akkoma kid copied it. (It is with good reason that the two most belligerent dickheads writing software for fedi agree so often on so many decisions, from forking Pleroma while shitting on the people that wrote it all the way to aping the same Twitter features without ever asking "Is this a retarded thing to do? Is it possible that a new feature could actually be...*bad*?" No, no, every single feature is good, every time you add something, it's good. It is impossible for something to make things *worse*, so just cram everything in like a goddamn retard.)
Speaking of Soapbox, behold, the only accurate comment on HN:
