A severe and spare painting of a 1600s Dutch married couple in wealthy black clothing with wide white ruffs around their necks. The standing man is wearing a wide hat and the woman sitting down. The dull room is empty and soft light, and another single red upholstered empty chair sits to the lower left. The painting looks a little off kelter and it is probably because a child was painted over after it was laid out. Combined with the empty chair and the austerity it becomes a portrait of grief. The painting is most famous for having been stolen in 1990 and never recovered.
