He is an African American, seated in an orange flight suit, the Advanced Crew Escape Suit (ACES) colloquially as the "pumpkin suit". In the background is a US flag and a small model of the Shuttle, and on either side of Melvin are his large dogs Jake and Scout, who he secretly smuggled into the photo shoot. One of the dogs is licking his face, and Melvin is smiling broadly.
