The force field protecting the Enterprise and Deep Space 9 was the pom-pom wrapped around a transparent virtual sphere. The pom-pom's sizzling quality made it useful for phaser hit points on spaceships, combined with an animated phaser beam. In the final episode of The Next Generation's Season 1, we used a blurred single frame of the pom-pom composited into a star field as a nebula.
