Black dish, black background, on a bed of two verdant petiole fronds, surrounded by a wreath of deep crimson maple leaves, sits a luminous lemon flower and five nigiri. The nigiri are composed of white rice, drizzled with a faintly yellow syrup. Atop the nigiri are fire-engine red horseshoe crab shaped miniature peppers, black sesame seeds for eyes. They sit awkwardly at attention, staring up at the viewer as if pleading, “Please don’t eat me!”
