Audiogram with Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000 logo, title “Et Tu, American Federation of Teachers?” and subhead “Educators do not, in fact, have to help the AI brokers capture our educational institutions” Subtitles: CHARLES LOGAN: At the end of the day OpenAI is going to do what's best for OpenAI or Microsoft or Google. The idea that we should be helping these companies further their hooks into our beloved institutions is insulting, rather than finding other forms of resistance and refusal that we can use to sort of build the futures that we do want and do need. One thing that's striking is just how total their vision of capture of higher ed is. OpenAI is not content to just target the classroom, but it's really all facets of life both for faculty and staff and students. And really to turn higher ed into another asset to charge rent for access to that platform. And it should be, I think very clear to professors who are making chatbots to consider how those chatbots may or will replace your work in thinking about what solidarity needs to happen across institutions and not just between faculty, (but) between contingent faculty and tenured faculty, between staff, between students, both undergraduate and graduate students.

In which Charles Logan joins me and @alex to wade through the neverending sludge of hype around "AI" in education --- and to discuss what we can do about it.

Thx to Christie Taylor for production!
