@Simpadoo @j One disability is a blessing somehow, but alcoholism isn't on the list. Nobody says they are glad their spouse or parent got Alzheimer's. My great-uncle got it: his wife had to take down the mirrors because he'd attack them, he was seeing Jerry (WW2 veteran, POW). And my grandmother asked her how she could handle it and her sister said, "I can't put him in a home. Nobody could deal with this unless they loved him."
It sucks. Complaining about it doesn't help--complaining saps your energy more than the task you might complain about, and is contagious besides--but pretending it is the best outcome is lying, and dragging more people in by the same mechanism as complaints. There's no shortage of bad shit in life. But lying increases the burden as much as complaining.
