   @sickburnbro @Charles_in_Charge @TrevorGoodchild Well, here's an interesting thing: you overlay a map of who colonized what with that "Earth at Night" satellite photo composite. If electricity is a reasonable proxy for prosperity and functioning infrastructure, the map is almost completely dark except for former British colonies. Most countries, if they have any bright spots, it's just the capital. The Belgians show up in the Congo and motherfuckers is chopping off hands; the British built courthouses and office buildings and banks. Powdered wigs, gin and tonic, cigarettes.
