   Actually, it was mostly because VW was basically the only European car brand back than that was even remotely affordable to the average person, because they had production facilities in China. Damn near every taxi back then was a Jetta, because Chinese cars had a terrible reputation for constantly breaking down.
   
   Meanwhile, politicians and corporate big wigs would drive around in these souped up Passats with comically enlarged grills and custom front- and tail lights.
