Nyhavn, the famous canal area in Copenhagen. The sky is pale blue with wispy white clouds. The canal water is dull metallic blue, slightly rippling and empty – there's not a bird or a boat moving on it. We are standing on a footbridge halfway across the water looking to our right at the city's landmark, iconic bank. It is a long row of historic, colourful terraced houses, some three storeys, some four or five storeys. The gentle up-and-down variety of heights of the triangular rooftops gives their skyline a nice swing. The houses are painted in a random variety of strong colours: light blue, dark blue, buttercup yellow, mustard yellow, deep orange, rust red. Along the quay: pedestrians, cyclists, parked bikes, the white parasols of pavement cafés. Anchored below the quay, a row of picturesque old wooden boats, black and white, no sails, just clear masts and rigging.
