There are two windows in each of the upper storeys of the central building, but they are not centred in the facade, with the decorative cap on the right-hand windows almost touching the building next to it. Since no one would build it that way, something happened to destroy about a metre of the building on the right.

I do like to see evidence of history’s chaotic interventions in architecture. This is a building on the market square in Sudbury, and I wonder what is the most likely explanation for how this* happened. Any ideas?
