When I started at MIT in 1986, the internal email system (Project Athena) invited me to set up my email address, and suggested an ugly mishmash of letters from my name, and I naively signed up for steve@athena.mit.edu, which it turns out no one had taken. And yes, every time they changed the way aliases work, which they did all the time, I would get a flood of emails intended for other steves.
