With deep disappointment and concern, we have taken note of the recent statements made by the Chairman of the Kuomintang (KMT), Mr. Eric Chu. Any attempt to relativize the crimes of the Nazi regime or to draw parallels between the atrocities committed in Germany and Europe between 1933 and 1945 and the current political situation in Taiwan is profoundly troubling. We must state unequivocally: Taiwan today is in no way comparable to the tyranny of National Socialism. The institutions in Taiwan cannot and must not be likened to the instruments of terror employed by the Nazi regime. We respectfully call on the KMT leadership to refrain from invoking inappropriate and historically insensitive comparisons in domestic political discourse. The millions of victims of National Socialism compel us to uphold the dignity of historical truth and to reject all forms of trivialization. Rather than distorting the memory of the past for political ends, we should work together to ensure that the crimes of the Nazi era are never forgotten, and that historical awareness is strengthened—both in Germany and in Taiwan, and throughout the international community.
