I know the audio is stream of consciousness, so here's a handy dandy guide to evangelical messaging on sex:
Teens hear: don't fornicate, save yourself for marriage.
Young adults hear: don't judge people for fornication or homosexuality, let's all heal from our booboos.
Thus the kids drop purity like a hot potato as soon as they hit 18.
Unmarried women hear: it's not your fault that you slept with Brad.
Unmarried men hear: nothing lol they aren't the right demo for messaging. Sometimes they hear “man up and marry those sluts.”
Thus 80% of singles in evangelical churches fornicate at least once a month.
Married women hear: you are a victim of bad men so you should be in charge of your husband.
Married men hear: don't expect anything from your wife (ESPECIALLY not sex), and do whatever she wants.
Thus singles are avoiding marriage.
Church discipline wasn't used on sinners because that's judgy and people make sad faces or write articles about the purity movement being harmful. The “Christian Masculinity” figures arose out of a deep sense of loss and guilt over this as the sexual revolution was underway. But they knew where their bread was buttered, so they presented masculinity without a key portion of masculinity – authority. Hair shirts and chest thumping were all over the place, from Bob Thieme's army worship to Driscoll doing MMA or whatever, but this was all just papering over the afflictions of the Church. Men were taught to have responsibility without authority (that is, to be slaves), but to feel manly while doing it. That's what the False Alphas series is about.
