Diagram of how to trim a cat's claw. The first part shows a short nail with the blood supply, also called quick or Kwik. Then longer claw with a long quick running trough, the blood supply gets longer with the nail, a shallow cut that runs trough the blood vessel will cause bleeding and the nail will still be too long. A smaller trim will cause the blood supply to get shorter. If you clip or file a little bit of the long nail, every few days, the blood supply will continue to recede, showing a cat claw decreasing in size. As the nail gets shorter so does the blood supply. Only when the nail is kept short it can be trimmed without bleeding, if the same cut had been made on the long nail it would have caused bleeding. Showing a cut in a now much shorter claw. A properly trimmed nail, showing a short claw with a shallow cut.
