Author (1452-1519) Treatise on painting, by Leonardo da Vinci : published in Paris in 1651 by Raphael du Fresne : with a portrait of Leonardo da Vinci and explanatory drawings This portrait is based on an engraving by Raphael Morghen (1758–1833), an Italian engraver known for his detailed and refined prints. Morghen's engraving itself was inspired by what was believed to be a self-portrait of Leonardo da Vinci. However, the accuracy of this attribution has been debated by art historians. The original self-portrait attributed to Leonardo is a red chalk drawing on paper (circa 1512), housed in the Royal Library of Turin, Italy. It depicts an elderly man with long hair and a flowing beard, often considered to represent Leonardo in his later years.
