A medium-sized bird, about the size of a blue jay, sits on top of a distant mossy telephone pole, lightly obscured by heavily blurred twigs in the foreground. Its belly is white, and whether can see of its wings show that they are black with white spot; some of its shoulder feathers appear ruffled. Its head is turned to reveal a long, sharply pointed beak with a spot of red at its base, and a brightly colored red cap on the back of its head. The rest of its face and head are mostly white or off-white.

Today's slightly-less-small friend: a red-bellied woodpecker stopping by a local telephone pole.
It was chased out of the neighborhood by blue jays a couple minutes later after nearly knocking one of them out of my elm tree. 😬
