Interview with Maru Yusuke, Associate Professor, Department of Space Flight Systems. Born in Hokkaido, Maru Yusuke gained his doctorate in engineering from the University of Tokyo and joined JAXA in 2008. He is an expert in space transport systems. His research explores the development of “spaceplanes” which, unlike rockets, effectively use the Earth’s atmosphere to head into space. Using wind tunnel experiments, Maru studies how a spaceplane can take in air, before compressing and mixing with fuel to burn and generate thrust. Maru works on developing inter-orbit transfer vehicles that fly from a low Earth orbit into deep space, looking at the possibility of standardising parts to reduce cost.
