"The importance of lunar seismology" by Kawamura Taichi, Institut de Physique du Globe, Paris. Analysis of lunar seismic waves or “Moonquakes” allow exploration of the Moon’s internal structure. While seismometers carried during the Apollo program were informative, the data was complicated by the long vibration and scattering of seismic waves due to the Moon’s sandy regolith and lack of atmosphere and water, and only covered the near side. A next-generation lunar seismic network could use multiple broadband seismometers, which are less affected by scattered waves, distributed globally on the lunar surface, to generate a three-dimensional structure of the inside of the Moon.
