First, a substantial number of Beijing shimin died in the course of a brutal assault by fully armed, heavily armored units of the PLA in central Beijing on the evening of 3–4 June and in subsequent mopping-up operations: Best available estimates place the total number of dead at between 600 and 1,200, including at least 39 students and “several dozen” soldiers, with an additional 6,000 to 10,000 civilians
