From Erin Reeds subscriber chat Erin Reed Today's update on trans people's passports: There has been a lot of discussion about the trans passport gender marker ban, what it means for individual situations, etc. To add onto that, there is a report of one person being told their documents will be confiscated if they try to change their gender marker. I have not been able to confirm this. Instead, here is what I can confirm: - Passport offices are no longer processing new gender marker changes or x gender markers, and such changes that are "in the works" are supposedly on hold according to The Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/us- news/2025/jan/23/trump-rubio-x- gender-passport - Existing passports that already have a gender marker change on them currently APPEAR safe, there has been no indication that they are being changed back or anything like that, though obviously this bears watching. Doing so would implicate a number of legal questions above and beyond trans rights. - No word on what will happen if you attempt to renew a passport that already has a gender marker change. If it has an X, it will likely come under more scrutiny. I have at least one person in a passport office telling me renewals will go by the documents you already have, but I cannot confirm this is widespread practice or that it will stay in place for a significant amount of time. Discuss today, and any other trans issues related to the new Trump admin.
