   OTD in 1977 Jimmy Carter became the 39th US President.

   Carter had the longest presidential retirement of any president. He worked to advance causes of peace, affordable housing, human rights, and fair elections. In 2002 he won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work with the Carter Center for "his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development".
