The South Pole Telescope 10-meter submm-quality telescope, 95, 150, 220 GHz 1.6, 1.2, 1.0 arcmin resolution 2007: SPT-SZ, 960 detectors, 95,150,220 GHz 2012: SPTpol, 1600 detectors, 95,150 GHz +Polarization 2017: SPT-3G, 16,000 detectors, 95,150, 220 GHz +Polarization Image of the South Pole Telescope, a slightly curved metal disk with a scoop-like bottom half at a right angle to the disk. It is mounted on a platform. A few people are in the image for scale. They are tiny compared to the large telescope.

    The current generation of ground-based CMB telescopes operate from high, dry locations like the Atacama desert in Chile and the South Pole.

    The South Pole telescope completed an upgrade to SPT-3G in 2017.
