Rounded, sparsely forested hills, broken occasionally by jagged formations of rock, stretched out into the horizon like an army of millipedes on the march. Gradually they rose into rugged, sharp ridges, brown and grey mottled here and there with green, and finally into nearly vertical cliffs and flat-topped, stepped rock terraces where the plain met the upland.
