Screenshot of my essay on Data Ecofeminism: "Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) is driving significant environmental costs. The rapid development and deployment of increasingly sophisticated algorithms capable of analysing vast amounts of data are increasing carbon emissions and water consumption. In some cases, these algorithms require substantial energy compared to classic versions, with big tech firms investing in nuclear power to fuel these generative models, which could have serious environmental consequences. This paper introduces seven data ecofeminist principles, offering a pathway to develop data and AI technologies at the intersection of intersectional feminism and critical environmentalism. These principles are grounded in ecofeminist and data feminism frameworks, which critique technocratic approaches and address power imbalances in data science, situated at the crossroads of social and environmental justice. The paper calls for a critical examination of GenAI technologies within the context of the climate crisis, advocating for algorithmic and infrastructural designs that prioritise people and the planet over profit."
