On the left, three panels show how consensus evolves within the multi-dimensional multi-option opinion dynamics model. Specifically, the panels show the opinions of all the simulated agents, represented as trajectories in time of their level of support for different options on different topics. In this example, they all eventually reach the same stable state, supporting option 2 and opposing option 1 and option 3. On the right, the distributions of such opinions are drawn in the form of 3-d plots, and as heat maps, to show the presence of a bifurcation at a critical value of the parameter that reflects the overall strength of correlations and influences. These plots illustrate how, after this parameter crosses the critical threshold, shifts start occurring, eventually leading the opinion distributions towards their final state.

    New paper out.

What happens when you make a model that includes realistic details about how people discuss ideas and decide how to act upon them? The answer is that with just 3 such elements of realism, one can mathematically explain the emergence of commonly observed situations, such as reaching a consensus and exchanging opinions, but also the separation of ideologies and the appearance of stable polarization. Not only this, but one can also account for phenomena such as peer pressure, cognitive dissonance, tactical voting and toxic idealism ( @benroyce I told you I was going to do it 😀 ) and prove how they affect the final state of the system.
