   After serving as Georgia's governor, Jimmy Carter ran for president in 1976 as a Washington outsider, winning the trust of a nation weary from Watergate.

   To avoid conflicts of interest, he placed his businesses, including his peanut farm, into a blind trust before taking office and later sold them.
