Moody colour photo taken at night, looking down into a Venetian canal. The water is completely still, without a single ripple, the colour of smoke. Along a diagonal in the top left corner of the image are the reflections of three brightly lit windows, with no shutters or curtains or other embellishments, glowing starkly pinky-white. The rest of the building is totally unlit, and its reflection can only be very very faintly seen on the water. There is an old worn wooden mooring post, emerging proud out of the water close to the right hand edge of the image; in one of those accidental moments of perfect lighting it looks like it has been spot lit by experts for a closeup in a film, the shadows and highlights hitting in exactly the most interesting and flattering places. This produces an intriguing contrast between the harsh clean almost industrial-looking window reflections and the intensely organic tactile texture of the wood.
