Eurasian jay greater covert feather

Today I've been writing about this little feather from a Eurasian jay, a colourful crow that loves acorns & buries them to eat later - it's a planter of trees, maker of woods.
There are only around 16 of these at the bend of each wing, so finding a moulted one is cool. Even cooler - they're not blue! As with many other blue birds, the effect is structural colour, not pigment. Knowing it’s a trick increases the feather’s allure.
