Another good example of that.
IIRC.it was only a few years ago when a Japanese Imperial soldier was rescued from hiding. The soldier was hiding in caves believing the was is still raging. He survived for decades by secretly stealing food.
No one knew the thief was a Japanese Imperial soldier until someone found him. The locals he was secretly taking food from dismissed it as a wild animal or some superstition.
Japan was contacted. Even thei had a hard time convincing him that the war ended decades ago, and that the Japanese Empire was dissolved and a new democratic government replaced it. According to news, the Japanese Imperial soldier kept on saying that people were tricking him and he'll be killed once he comes out.
If Filipinos are very hateful because of the past, that Japanese Imperial soldier will never see the light of day after he was discovered. The reverse happened. When the locals learned what was going on, they left food for him near his cave, until the Japanese government arrived and started their plan to convince him the war ended.
NOTE: The story above is not exact, it has been years since, I'm only trying to recall from memory.
We don't let the past blind us of what's in the present. That Japanese Imperial soldier is a human being. No matter what his fellow soldiers did, no matter what what he did himself, he is still a human being.
Was it forgiveness? Maybe, maybe not.
If there's a need for punishment, then it'll be done in the proper, humane way. Not by "canceliing" and "revenge".
Filipinos had the option not to alert the Japanese government and let him die there believing the war is still raging on. Probably blow it up and bury him alive, after all he's very old, one less 'worthless piece of s*it who committed war crimes' human, right?
No. We don't think like that as a people.
It doesn't mean we've forgotten either. In fact, our National–level dealings with Japan is influenced by our pasts. We learned from it and use it as a guide to keep equal agreements.
That's how we should all be.
Don't let the past blind us from our present problems. Instead, we should learn from the past so it can guide us in securing a better future for all parties involved.
