A Virginia rail, medium sized shorebird not confined to Virginia, pauses while poking around in shoreline marsh grass. Its pointy beak is about an inch and a half long and orange, and it has a facial patch surrounding the eye that is pale blue. It's back is a mottled black and brown. A rather odd-looking aquatic bird but not un-handsome.
