Photograph of a male house finch perched on a gray branch covered with over-wintered crap apples with a blue sky in the background. The finch is left leaving one eye visible. It has fluffed up its chest feathers to keep warm in cold weather but looks as though it has its breast thrust forward. Male house finches have white and brown mottled feathers with a strawberry-red blush around the head and chest that varies in intensity from male to male. They have brown backs, brown wings with white edging, dark eyes, a silvery-grey beak, and black legs and feet.
