Two things:
1) If you reply to me "followers only" I'm going to screenshot it and reply public. Don't do that followers only mess in my timeline.
2) This is what I mean when I say many users on Mastodon lack basic empathy. Users that are comfortable on Mastodon, and know that Black people are being abused on Twitter, just don't care that those people's suffering should be reduced as quickly as possible by moving elsewhere.
