But if the US doesn't HAVE factories making those things, and your only choice is an import (which is true of MOST things right now, from computer parts to clothing, to food!), then you get crazy prices! And if you want to place tariffs on those things to encourage new US manufacturing, then you FIRST have to support businesses with programs to build those factories, get them up and running, get their work force going, and then GRADUALLY introduce tariffs so, when the high taxes really kick in, you have a domestic product that's an affordable alternative to an import. That's the old Alexander Hamilton plan. Anyway, that's the skinny, from someone in the thick of it. Tariffs aren't "good" or "bad." What's good or bad is the way you implement them, and what other programs you have in place IN ADVANCE, to support domestic manufacturing.
