The south had no interest in building a mill or a foundry or a factory anywhere: they had free labor. A black guy they could get indefinitely, and you could get seven years of an Irish guy's life for the cost of a boat ticket. The Appalachian mountains run through there: they could have had as much coal as they cared to dig out of the ground, but they didn't have much use for it. They wouldn't have needed the slaves if they bothered to industrialize.
Likewise, if Matthew Limbaugh weren't somehow amused by a bot that spits out canned phrases that were edgy 20 years ago, they'd have some better bots.
