As Broderick points out, the primary reason that this misinformation is spreading is because people want it to be true, whether it is or not. With the election just a few weeks away, partisans are pushing phony narratives to boost their candidates and hurt their opponents. And there’s nothing new about that. But there’s also a chance that a feed that becomes notorious for AI slop drives the next generation away. If Facebook wants to attract more young people, it may first need to do a better job reining in the worst impulses of its old people.
