It's crazy how biology has these scaling laws. For example, the number of calories a mammal needs daily ≈ m^{3/4}, where m is the mass of the mammal. This relationship apparently holds for all known mammals. Incidentally (or maybe not), the forth root turns up in almost all of these biological scaling laws.
