Excerpt from the article, with a person commenting on Amy’s estrangement. When I spoke to Ken Nickel, Amy’s former professor, he told me that he hoped the relationship would improve. Amy’s estrangement was an “estrangement in world view, in ideas,” he said. “In my understanding, Amy wasn’t beaten as a child, she wasn’t neglected. She was loved. As best as her parents could love her, they tried to love her.” He added, “I don’t genuinely see it as ‘Her parents did harm to her.’ So my hope is that she can somehow forgive them for that, in the years to come.”
