In 1997 a large hand claw was found in Niger by David Varricchio
Through 1997-98 American palaeontologist Paul Sereno and his team at Gadoufaoua discovered Fossils that represented about two-thirds of the skeleton.
In 1998, Sereno, et al named and described the type species Suchomimus tenerensis, meaning crocodile mimic.
